Sling It Baby, Part II

As promised pictures of the other baby sling. And I got a request to make another one, maybe for sale eh?

I went with a Japanese sort of print. Her colors are pink and light green. Matches perfectly right. She didn't want girly girly so I made something a little more mature.

Oddly enough the rings worked perfectly this time though they were the same size as the other sling. Maybe the cold temperatures in my sewing area shrunk the material. I swear it's 10 degrees colder there than outside.

See, there is pink and green in the fabric. I CAN accommodate.

I think the solid accent color is neat too.

And another shot of my striped wallpaper. I didn't test the cat in the sling this time. I was short on time and didn't have enough time to wash it (again). I like living on the edge like that you know. Running out of time and stuff. Pushing the envelope. Using tin foil in the microwave...

Oh and I know you loooove my Chick-fil-A Cow pajama pants. Gah, the striped wallpaper really bothers me.

Next week, I will finish a bag I already started on pending the arrival of a riveter.

Sling it Baby!

So it's been a few days since my last post, yeah OK a couple of weeks. What have I been up to? Well, I've been pondering the mysteries of the universe, solving difficult math problems, coming up with a viable solution to the economic crisis though no one in Washington will return my calls. But most importantly I have been working on THIS......

This my dears, is a baby sling. Two fabulous gal pals of mine are having babies so I thought I'd whip up something handmade and super handy.

The first gal, her colors are tan and pink. Trust me, it's really cute. I chose to use a maroony/red against a French rose pattern. My loose interpretation of tan and pink.

I got the rings at the hardware store. The largest they had were 2" but I think from now on I will use slingrings because first of all, it's impossible to find anything larger than 2" at the hardware store and really that's a tight fit. Secondly, slingrings.com has a variety of colors. Don't worry, I checked the specs on the hardware store rings and they are rated up to 200 pounds per ring. If your baby is 200 pounds you have bigger problems than finding a baby sling!

Yes, I have striped wallpaper in my bathroom. Yes, I plan on changing that (soon). Yes, I cropped my head out of the picture on purpose. I already opened my bag of flour that I was going to test the sling with so I used the next best thing, my cat. He didn't like it too much but I think it was squishing his stitches. He just got neutered. I mean, we're close enough I can tell you stuff like that right?! And yes, I did wash the baby sling after using the cat to test it.
Well, there you have it. I have another one to make for the other fabulous gal. I will post pics of it also because the fabric is so pretty. My goal is to make slings that the moms won't be embarrassed to wear in public. Just because the nursery is pink and blue and fru-fru doesn't mean EVERYTHING has to be. Unless you want it to be. I can accommodate.
Let me know what you think....about the baby sling, not my bathroom wallpaper.

Featured Item of the Week

This week I totally got ahead of myself, as I usually do and sewed the liner inside the bag before I was completely ready. This is what happens when my brain goes on autopilot. I hadn't made up my mind how I wanted the handles to be and I also had not figured out if I wanted to take the challenge of a zippered inside pocket or just have a little side pocket on the inside.

These decisions and many more were made AFTER I sewed in the liner. As you can see below, we all survived the surgery. I dissected the liner from the outside of the purse. I didn't wait too long in fear of the bonding process having already begun. But I only removed the liner, I didn't actually take the liner pieces apart and believe me, if you want to add a zippered pocket or anything else for that matter, either take the liner completely apart or do it BEFORE you sew the liner pieces together (like you're supposed to do). As you can see below it's not impossible but, to use an analogy that kinda fits enough for you to get the picture.....it's easier to get out of the car if you take your seatbelt off first! Well, the analogy doesn't really fit but the point is, things are easier if you do them in order.

I moved forward, facing my fears and put in a zippered pocket as well as a little slide in pocket. The pieces in the bottom of the bag will be handles after I find my riveting tools.

After making a few daintily handled purses, I thought I'd give this one some heavy metal hardware. Thanks to my husband for driving me to every home center and craft store in a 20 mile radius to find exactly what I was looking for. I even got a grommet set. I know you'll want to stick around to see what I do with that. I mean seriously, what better way to get out frustrations than punching holes in something and get the added benefit of it becoming some sort of artsy/crafty creation (If I measure right!)

Just check out the metal loops. It's the Joan Jett of purse accoutrements.

This is how the handles will attach after the um, rivets are found. Mom has already laid claim to this bag and I figured what better way to advertise than to have my very own mother carrying my one of a kind creation. And believe me, if it can carry all of her stuff and still hold up longer than a week, this bag will stand the test of time.

Well, once again it's Sunday night. I hope you all had a great weekend. Here's looking forward to a week unlike any of the others. And I mean that in a good way!

Welcome

Welcome to Yeah, Sew. Ever since I was a little girl I loved to make crafts with my mom and after all these years I have decided to take it public. These are the top three for this week.

Isn't it cute? I love the brown background with the big pink dots. It's girly and yet not over the top you know?! I mean, a full grown woman can carry it and not feel like she's borrowing her daughter's Hannah Montana bag. Yipe!

I used the same pattern as the brown and pink dotted one above but made it bigger. Well, you know what they say about bigger.... Duh, you can put more stuff in it. This is not that kind of blog. Here's another view under the harsh direct lighting of my ironing lamp.

I donated this one to an auction at my son's school. They're project is an economic stimulus package. Very clever! I hope they get the highest bid. I hear they're going to put gas cards and VISA gift cards in the bag as part of the auction but I'm sure everyone will bid to get the most awesomest bag to hit the streets. hehe (A good imagination is a must for us creative types!)

So on to bag number three for this week. I know, three bags in one week *gasp*. But you know, I had other stuff to do like nap, pet the cat; you know...stuff.

This is quickly becoming my favorite. (Sorry pink bag.) I like the size of it and the black bamboo handles contrast the orangey/reddish color so nicely. However, I must refrain from using all my bags if I hope to sell any at the craft fair. People generally don't want to buy used items at the craft fairs. They want a nice, new, clean bag to get their own pen marks on and gum stuck to the bottom. I'm willing to make the sacrifice for my customers.

Doesn't that lining just make you want to crawl into the bag and have a picnic?

Well, that's it for this week. No chance to churn out another handmade crafty as it is nearly 10:00 on a Sunday night and Monday will be here before I'm ready. I'm glad you found me. Stay tuned. There's no telling what I'll be up to next. And IF my camera ever finishes charging I'll post pics of some of my other items. I know...I can't wait either.
